Understand what tear-off exposes

Removing old shingles or another covering reveals the boards or sheathing beneath. That is the opportunity to assess their condition, but it is also a stage when the house no longer has its finished roofing in place. Bare wood isn't the completed weather barrier. The plan needs to account for the area being opened and the protection that follows.

Moisture can affect exposed wood before the new covering is installed. Swollen edges or damaged boards can change the surface the new roof sits on. Ask how the contractor sequences removal, inspection and preparation. The answer should describe the actual stages of your job, rather than rely on a general assurance that the forecast looks good or that the crew usually finishes quickly.

Discuss the temporary weather layer

Underlayment covers the prepared deck beneath the finished roof. Its joins, fastenings and connections around openings all contribute to how the protected area sheds water. Valleys, roof edges and skylight curbs need suitable details too. A roll laid across the middle of a roof doesn't by itself explain what happens at those points.

Ask the contractor to describe what will be in place when the day's work stops and how the exposed section connects to the rest of the roof. At the eaves, the drainage detail needs to carry runoff past the wood edge. You don't need to specify the installation yourself. You do need an understandable account of how the temporary stage is managed before the final covering is complete.

Ask about the daily work plan

The amount removed in a day should relate to what can be prepared and protected. Ask how the crew decides that area and what happens if weather changes while work is underway. A realistic answer includes the sequence and contingency arrangements, not a promise that unexpected rain can never occur. Clarify who will explain any change to the schedule.

Also ask who checks the roof before the site closes for the day. Connections at vents, chimneys and openings deserve attention alongside the broad roof surfaces. Having the question answered beforehand makes it easier to understand what you are seeing during the job. It also gives you a named point of contact if something about the day's progress or overnight protection is unclear.

Include the ground-level handover

Roof protection and site cleanup are separate tasks, and both belong in the daily discussion. Removing roofing produces fragments and loose fixings that can reach the ground. Ask how walkways, driveways and the areas used by your household will be checked and cleared. A tidy appearance from the front gate doesn't explain what has been done around the working side of the house.

Magnetic sweeps can help collect loose nails, while other debris needs gathering and removal. Confirm which routes will remain available and which areas should be avoided while the project continues. The day should end with a clear explanation of the work completed and what comes next. That is useful information for living around a roof replacement, without expecting you to supervise the installation yourself.
