Start with what is wrong
Gutters need to do more than catch rain at the roof edge. The water also needs a clear route through the downspouts and away from the house. We look at where your roof sends the most runoff, where it spills now and where each outlet empties. We form seamless gutters at your home from a continuous coil, cut to fit each run. There are still joints at corners and outlets, but no splices along the straight lengths. The slope and supports matter just as much as the metal: a new gutter that sags or drains toward a blocked outlet will still overflow.

The profile is only part of the choice. We also look at where runoff gathers, how the gutter is supported and where the downspout empties. Three profiles, drawn to the same scale.
5-inch K-style rain gutters
The standard profile for most East Bay homes, and the one we hang most weeks of the year.

Choosing a material
Seamless aluminum
Seamless aluminum is a lightweight choice that won't rust. It comes in more than 30 baked-on colors, so you can match the trim or keep it quiet against the roof edge. The expected life is 20 to 30 years. Ask about the finish warranty and the care it requires.
Copper
Copper starts bright and changes color as it weathers. The joints are soldered, rather than sealed with caulk, and the material can last 50 years or more. It is worth considering when you want the gutters to remain a visible part of the house, particularly alongside tile or older wood details.
K-style profile
K-style has a flat back that fits against the fascia board. Its shaped front looks a little like crown molding. It can hold more water than a half-round gutter of the same width, but choosing a profile still means checking the roof area and the outlets.
Half-round profile
Half-round gutters have a curved bottom and sit in brackets fixed to the house. They are often chosen for Spanish, Mediterranean and Craftsman homes. The open curve is easy to reach during cleaning, though leaves and silt still need to be removed.

Questions about rain gutters
What size gutter does my roof need?
We measure the roof area feeding each gutter run, rather than using the home's floor area alone. Five-inch gutters are listed for about 5,500 square feet with 2x3-inch or 3x4-inch downspouts. Six-inch gutters are listed for about 7,900 square feet, roughly 40 percent more water, with 3x4-inch downspouts. Pitch, valleys and long runs also affect the choice. We'll look at where water collects before recommending a size.
Do you form the gutter at my house?
Yes. We bring the forming equipment to your house and make the aluminum or copper runs from coil on site. Each length is made for the roofline it will serve, rather than joined together from short stock pieces. That removes seams along the straight runs. Corners, end caps and downspout connections still need to be fitted carefully; seamless doesn't mean the entire system has no joints.
Can you match what is already there?
We can often match the profile and get close to the existing color when you're replacing only part of the system. There are many baked-on finishes for aluminum gutters, but an older or discontinued profile may limit the match. We check what you have during the visit and explain the available choices. You can then decide whether replacing one section will give you the result you want.
Do you take the old gutters away?
Yes. Removing and hauling away the old gutters is part of the work, including the brackets and fasteners that come down with them. We separate aluminum and copper for recycling and clear debris from the walkways and garden beds around the house. The job includes cleanup, so you aren't left figuring out how to dispose of long metal sections after the new system goes up.
