Gutter pulling away from the house
A gutter that has dropped, tipped forward or opened a gap along the top is no longer held by its fasteners. The nails or screws have either worked loose from the vibration of years of rain, or the fascia they were driven into has softened. Full gutters weigh far more than empty ones, and a run that was barely holding gives up in the first wet week of winter.

- Standing back from the house, the line of the gutter is no longer straight. One section dips, or a whole run leans out so you can see daylight between the back of it and the fascia. Water pools in the low part and spills there in rain. Sometimes you can see the fastener itself, a spike pulled a couple of inches out of the board or a hanger hanging free with the screw still in it.
- Look for the pattern. A single sag between two good fixings usually means a hanger has failed. A run that leans away along its whole length points to the board behind it. Peeling paint, dark patches and a soft feel when you press the fascia say the wood has been wet for a long time. If the gutter is heavy with wet debris, that alone can be enough to pull a marginal fixing.

Spikes and ferrules that have worked loose
Older gutters were nailed through the trough into the fascia with a long spike. Every freeze, thaw and full-gutter weight cycle works the spike a little further out, until one winter the run drops.
Hangers too far apart
Hidden hangers only hold a run if there are enough of them. Gutters fitted with hangers spaced too widely bow between fixings under a load of water and debris, and the fixings at each end carry more than they should.
Fascia that has softened
Wood that has been wet repeatedly stops holding a screw. Once that happens, new fixings in the same board pull out as easily as the old ones, and the run needs sound wood or a longer fastener into the rafter tail behind.
A gutter full of debris and standing water
A run packed with wet leaves holds a surprising weight. Combined with the water that cannot drain past the blockage, it exceeds what the fixings were ever meant to carry.
Ice, ladders and branches
A ladder leaned on the gutter, a branch that came down in a storm or a rare freeze that filled the trough with ice can tear a fixing out in one go rather than gradually.
The honest rule
Repair or replace
Rehanging a sound gutter with new hangers into sound fascia is a repair, and a quick one. Hidden hangers screwed at close spacing hold far better than the spikes they replace, and a run that has dropped can be lifted back to its fall at the same time. If the fascia is soft only near one or two fixings, longer screws that reach the rafter tail behind the board are often enough.
The gutter is worth replacing when the sagging has creased or split the metal, when the seams have opened as the run twisted or when it is an old steel gutter that is rusting inside as well. The fascia is worth replacing when a screwdriver goes into it, wherever you test. Both at once is a bigger job than either, but it is the one that lasts, and a new gutter hung on rotten wood will be back where it is now within a few winters. Can the same gutter just be put back up?
Usually, if the metal has not creased and the seams are still tight. The fixings are what failed, so the repair is new hangers at closer spacing into sound wood. A section that has kinked where it dropped may need replacing, and a seamless run can have one length remade without touching the rest.
Should the gutter be nailed or screwed?
Screwed, through hidden hangers that clip inside the trough. Spikes driven through the front of the gutter rely on the grip of a nail in end grain and loosen with every wet season. Screws into sound fascia, or into the rafter tail where the board is thin, hold the load without working out.
How long can a sagging gutter be left?
Until it rains hard. A run that has already dropped holds water at the low point, which adds weight, which pulls the next fixing. Water spilling from the sag lands at the foundation and soaks the fascia. If it is dry weather, there is time to plan; if the forecast is wet, have it looked at first.
