Gutters overflow in heavy rain
If the gutters drain a light rain and spill along their whole length in a hard one, the run is being asked to move more water than its outlets can pass. Sometimes the channel really is too small for the roof above it, but more often the downspouts are too few, too narrow or partly blocked. Sizing the way out comes before sizing the trough.

- Most of the year the gutters are invisible. Then a winter front comes through, the rain turns heavy for twenty minutes and water sheets over the front edge along a whole side of the house, not just at one corner. Under the eaves the ground is churned up, and there may be a line of splash marks on the lower wall. Once the rain eases, the gutters catch up and drain normally, which is why the problem is easy to forget until the next storm.
- Look at the roof feeding that side. A long, steep slope drains fast, and a wide roof with a single downspout at one end is asking a lot of one pipe. Count the downspouts, note their size and check whether any of them discharge into an underground drain that could itself be blocked. If the overflow is worst where the gutter is longest between outlets, that is your answer more often than not.

Too few downspouts for the run
Each downspout can only pass so much water a minute. A long run with one outlet at the far end fills faster than it empties, and the trough becomes a pool that overtops in the middle where it is furthest from any way out.
Outlets that are partly choked
A downspout does not have to be blocked solid to fail in a storm. A wad of leaves at the elbow that lets a trickle through in drizzle chokes the flow the moment the rain gets serious, and the gutter above it overflows.
A steep or large roof plane
The steeper and larger the slope, the faster water reaches the edge. Roofs with long unbroken planes deliver a burst that a standard channel struggles to hold even for the few seconds before it drains.
A channel genuinely too small
Some houses were fitted with the narrowest gutter available, and a broad roof above it will always outrun it. This is the least common of the four, and it is only worth concluding after the outlets have been counted and cleared.
Underground drains backing up
Where downspouts feed into buried pipes, a collapsed or silted drain sends water back up the downspout. The gutter overflows and the fault is in the ground, not on the roof.
The honest rule
Repair or replace
Adding outlets is the usual repair: a second downspout partway along a long run, or a larger one where the roof is steep. It is a day's work on an existing gutter and it changes the behavior of the whole side. Clearing every elbow and checking that buried drains run free comes first, because a clean system sometimes turns out to be adequate after all.
Replacement is the right call when the existing gutters are also sagging, rusting at the seams or hung on tired fascia, or when the roof is so large that no arrangement of outlets on a standard channel will keep up. Then a wider profile with outlets placed for the roof, rather than for where the old ones happened to be, is worth the cost. Would bigger gutters stop the overflow?
Only if the trough is what is limiting the flow, and it usually is not. A larger channel holds a bigger pool before it overtops, so the storm has to last a little longer to cause the same spill. Outlets are what empty it. Most houses that overflow in heavy rain need another downspout more than they need a wider gutter.
How many downspouts should a run have?
It depends on the roof area draining into it and how steep that roof is, so there is no single number. As a rough guide, a long run that meets the roof's largest slope should not depend on one outlet. An inspection works it out from the roof rather than from the length of the gutter alone.
Could gutter guards be making the overflow worse?
Some can. A solid-cover guard sheds fast water straight over the edge in a heavy burst, because the water cannot turn the corner into the slot. Mesh guards clogged with fine debris behave like a lid. If the overflow started after guards went on, say so at the inspection.
